Abstract
During the last decade there has been a resurgence of interest in the impact of neighborhood characteristics on people? health and mortality. The aims of this study are to examine spatial patterns of standardized mortality rates(SMR?); to explore composite factors of neighborhood characteristics affecting mortality rates; and to analyze most important factors determining spatial variation in mortality rates for the capital region. Spatial pattern of SMR? in the capital region showed strong positive spatial autocorrelation. To take account of the spatial pattern of the mortality rates, spatial regression techniques used to control for spatial dependency of SMR?. In order to eliminate multicollinearity problem among independent variables, factor analysis was used for extracting new dimensional factors. Four factor scores obtained from factor analysis were employed for spatial regression analysis. Spatial lag regression model showed that economic wealth, walkable environment, and social capital have the strong negative relation with SMR?, while poor vulnerability condition has positive relation, explaining 82% of total variation of SMR? among the capital region. As the neighborhood economic wealth level is higher, area is more walkable with more social capital, and the area has less poor vulnerability, its standardized mortality rates become lower. To improve health condition and mortality rate toward more viable and healthier city, health and welfare policies are required with an establishment of the differential planning strategies for considering relative important environmental factors affecting mortality rates in the capital region.
