Abstract

The purposes of this study are to classify the regions by health-friendly level and to test a hypothesis that the people who live in the health-friendly environment are healthier than the others. For classifying regional groups, it separates 232 municipalities into 16 groups by 4 types of urban environmental characteristics. It produced five types of regions with similar characteristics of health-friendly environmental conditions including central cities in mega-region, farming areas in periphery region, farming areas in Honam region, medium- and small-sized areas in Gyeongsang region, and medium-sized cities in mega-region. There were significant relationships between population health and health-friendly environmental conditions. Specifically, areas with better conditions of environments such as rural ares in Honam region, had healthy conditions of citizens. While, residents’ health condition was poor where areas with lower conditions of environments, e.g., medium-sized cities in mega-region. This study contributes to better understanding the conditions of health with perspective of urban planning. It provides useful insights into the different roles of municipalities in promoting good health.
