Abstract
This study analyzed and examined the views of Korean students taking Japanese culture classes in university liberal arts courses, and reviewed educational plans and proposals. When students were asked what motivated them to take classes in Japanese culture and what they hoped to gain from these classes, the most common responses were “travel information” and “studying Japanese.” In addition, the study confirmed the necessity of cultural education as part of language education, as reported in previous studies. I suggest re-examining and approaching Japanese culture classes for non-Japanese-language majors through lighter topics such as “food culture, YouTube, J-POP, and animation” that are applicable to the students’ lives rather than through heavier topics. Furthermore, I recommend re-examining the use of various “travel destination”–related topics that can retain the interest and attention of students as a teaching method for culture classes. In addition, I cautiously suggest covering the “history” part, which may be uncomfortable, in culture classes while observing students’ reactions within the appropriate context. I believe that this study’s suggestions will be helpful not only for Japanese culture classes in university liberal arts courses but also for Japanese-language education, which is closely related to Japanese culture.
