Abstract
This study focuses on the Songs of Joseon postcard series, one of the "Joseon Customs Postcards" produced during the Japanese colonial period, and offers a critical examination of the songs included in the series. It analyzes the nature of the postcards as complex literary texts formed through the interaction between photographic images and Japanese-language lyrics. Through this approach, the study seeks to elucidate how the imperial gaze visualized and emotionally reconstructed colonial Joseon, and how the principles of affective governance operated within this representational process. Ultimately, the Songs of Joseon postcard series functioned as an emotional apparatus of colonial representation, constructed at the intersection of Japanese capital and imperial sentimentality. While the series outwardly adopts the form of a cultural product introducing Joseon, it is underpinned by a controlling gaze that regulates and typifies colonial reality, thereby incorporating it into the affective regime of the empire. In this sense, Songs of Joseon constitutes a paradigmatic example of a colonial representational strategy that emotionally reconfigures and beautifies colonial reality in order to legitimize imperial rule, while rendering it an object of aesthetic enjoyment.
