Abstract

Among the novel works published in the 1950s, this paper based on works that are conscious of the war on the Korean Peninsula and show their views of the Korean War in any form. Focusing on the gaze of looking at the Korean War, this paper examines Japanese writers' perceptions of the Korean War in the 1950s and their underlying characteristics. Specifically, it focuses on Ashihei Hino, known as a ‘soldier writer’, Yōko Ōta, a writer who wrote a novel describing the atomic bomb experience in Hiroshima, and Kiku Amino, whose talent was recognized by Naoya Shiga and later made her debut in the literary world. The analysis revealed several commonalities in the three writers’ works. First, while they were knew of the Korean War, they showed little interest in the actual war situation on the Korean Peninsula Hino and Ōta’s writings revealed their interest in the Rhee line was greater than in the war itself, and their novels, have characters who accept it as an invasion of Japan and should re-arm and go to war with Korea. In addition, imperialistic or colonialist ideologies were apparent in their literature on the Korean War. Furthermore, the three writers’ works do not reveal historical reflection or self-reflection regarding the war that arose as Korea attempted to establish an independent nation following colonization by Japan. This reveals that Japan was yet to renounce and overcome its colonial past in the first half of the 1950s.
