Abstract

This paper analyzes Oe Kenzaburo’s perspective on the Korean Peninsula and the Korean War by examining his early novels and essays. Oe is a writer who carried out the will of anti-war, anti-nuclear, and peace by considering the ideologies of ‘renunciation of war’ and the ‘sovereignty of the people’ of the new constitution as the moral of real life. However, Oe’s discourses and novels up to the early 1960s capture the psychology of longing for war as a ‘young man who came late’ to the war. This is the result of accepting defeat only as a sense of ‘disconnection’ from the war period, a contradictory sentiment resulting from a lack of historical awareness of the war. Oe’s discourse on the Japanese war focused more on the experience of defeat and the meaning of life after defeat than on historical reflection. This attitude was confirmed not only by Japan’s war, but also by his perspective on the Korean Peninsula and the Korean War. As a ‘post-war democrat’ and a non-communist progressive writer, Oe has shown nationalist tendencies within the magnetic field of post-war nationalism and leftist nationalism, and was inclined toward socialist systems such as those of China and the former Soviet Union. As for the Korean Peninsula, he saw more hope in the future of North Korea than in Korea, which was under occupation just like Japan, and his dissatisfaction with the South Korean government, which declared the Syngman Rhee Line, also played a role in his negative view of Korea. The Korean War in the novels depicts the U.S. military as the main actor in the war, as if it were an American war, and in the case of the Zainichi Korean characters who were set up as someone who experienced the Korean War, they were nothing more than those who embodied Japan’s reality of becoming a nation of ‘sexual human’ and Oe’s literary theme of trying to capture the post-war society through ‘sexual things’. It is only after “The Silent Cry”(1967), a re-lighting of 100 years of violence-ridden modern history, that the historical understanding that the division of the Korean peninsula was the result of Japan’s war and colonial rule became clear, that is, from the late 1960s.
