Abstract

Using "moths" as a keyword, we examined the relationship between Komako and Yoko, who are the heroines of the novel Snow Country. We found that moths are symbolically linked to both the regional characteristics of Echigo Yuzawa, which is the novel’s setting, and the contemporary context in which Snow Country was written. First, the novel introduces Echigo Chijimi, a traditional and time-honored textile, and describes the heavy labor of the weavers. It also references the historical background of the region’s silk reeling industry. During the Great Depression, the silk-reeling industry in Niigata suffered due to a sharp decline in cocoon and raw silk prices Around the same time, the tourism industry began to develop. This was triggered by the development of transportation networks, such as the opening of the Shimizu Tunnel. Ski and hot spring resorts then appear in the novel, reflecting this shift. The heroine Komako works as a geisha and maid within this new industry. Second, moths represent the inseparable relationship between Komako and Yoko. The novel's heroine is associated with weaving, a key feature of Snow Country, and is depicted in close relation to imagery of spinning wheels and thread. This symbolism reflects the two paths that the silkworm may take. The first path involves emerging from the cocoon to become a moth, and the second path is to be boiled alive inside the cocoon to produce thread. These two paths mirror the lives of Komako and Yoko. Furthermore, the "pale green moth" can be seen as a representation of their interwoven lives. In this way, Snow Country depicts the lives of tourists from Tokyo, such as Shimamura, who began visiting Niigata following the opening of the Shimizu Tunnel. At the same time, the novel portrays the women, whose lives were shaped by the emerging tourism industry.
