Abstract
This paper is concerned with a group of love poems beginning with “Kaimami” in the Kokin Waka Shu. I first pointed out errors in the current annotations on the poems of Ariwara no Narihira. Next, I pointed out that in the Heian period, it was common knowledge that love began with the knowledge of a woman's true identity after a glimpse. I then pointed out that Narihira's poem depicts a narrative world that transcends this conventional wisdom. Next, I gave detailed interpretations of the poems of Tadamine and Tsurayuki. I pointed out that their poems proceeded within the framework of common understanding of kaimami, and that they portrayed a realistic Kaimami without excess or deficiency. Finally, I presented the possibility that the intricate structure of the kaimami-uta in the Kokinshū was a device contrived by the compilers to mitigate the sense of incongruity that would result from incorporating Narihira's poems as they were.
