Abstract
As a legal apparatus, the Japanese family registry system (koseki) is invisible in everyday life, yet it functions as an institutional foundation—indeed, as a form of social infrastructure—for stable population management and maintaining social order in Japanese society. This paper analyzes how kosekiis represented in Keiichiro Hirano’s novel A Man (2018) as an infrastructure embedded in complex social, cultural, and political relationships, rather than as a physical structure. Through the story of a man who changes his family registry, living as someone else, and whose true identity is revealed only upon his death, this novel raises fundamental questions about the ethical issues inherent in the state’s institutional system that assigns a legal identity to someone at birth. As the legal persona constructed through koseki comes into conflict with the ethical and existential self, the novel illustrates how the infrastructure of koseki shapes a person’s life and can sometimes erase or replace it. In particular, the fact that a family registry can be institutionally bought, sold, or appropriated indicates a profound rupture between one’s legal identity and the self, formed through the complex interplay of memory, experience, and emotion. Beneath the stability and order provided by the koseki lie ethical and political problems that may suppress individual existential freedom and diversity.
