Abstract

The present paper explores the conditions under which leading Korean companies in the smart phone industry will become winners in the long run. In particular, this paper focuses on network effects and innovation, which would be sustainable sources of competitive advantage by engendering virtuous cycles for the winner. Thus far, leading Korean companies have built up advantage by investing in R&D early on. By analyzing the virtuous cycle in innovation, we derive when market leaders sustain their advantage or when they fail to do so. Until now, Korean companies have not built up advantage based on network effects: They run their businesses relying on the Android ecosystem. Recently, it has been reported that Samsung Electronics is considering the introduction of its own operating system. The present paper offers how latecomers like Samsung Electronics could gain a foothold in the platform market
