본 연구는 다각화된 기업의 사업부(또는 계열사) 관리 유형을 개발하고, 각 유형별로 효과적인 상황을 제시하는 데 목적이 있다. 본사(corporate headquarters)가 각 사업부를 관리하는 방법은 다각화된 기업의 성과에 큰 영향을 미친다. 그럼에도 불구하고 본사의 관리유형에 대한 체계적인 논의는 부족하다. 이에 본 연구는 개별 사업부에 대한 통제방법 및 사업부간의 조정/통합 방법의 두 차원에 따라 전능형, 중개형, 연방형, 전문가형 등과 같은 네 가지 본사 관리유형을 개발하였다. 이러한 본사유형에 의거하여, 각각의 관리유형이 어떤 상황에서 효과적인가를 명제로 제시하였다. 본사의 사업부 관리 방식은 사업부의 수, 사업 포트폴리오의 성장단계, 다각화 정도 및 수직적 통합도 등과 같은 요인들에 따라 그 효과성이 달라지게 된다.
Abstract
The competitiveness of a large diversified firm originates from its effective management of subsidiaries and business portfolios. This study suggests a conceptual typology for analyzing the management style of corporate headquarters(HQ) in the multibusiness corporations. The four management style - almighty, intermediary, federate, and professional - are delineated from the two criteria, 1) control mechanism employed to manage individual business(input/throughput control vs. output control) and 2) coordination and integration mechanism to create synergy among businesses(relational vs. normative). Based on the conceptual typology, several propositions are developed to identify the conditions under which each management style is effective to generate parenting advantage.
