Abstract

This study aims to break away from the dichotomy between land and sea by understanding the ocean as a social space and exploring the socio-spatial meanings of vessel movement, and to provide a basis for recognizing the relationships between the two in an integrated manner. In particular, the relational approach focusing on the linkage and interaction of various actors, which can be expressed as the epistemology emphasizing relationship, materiality, and agency, can be developed in the maritime space from a theoretical perspective. Since ships cannot be separated into ‘moving things’ and ‘moving objects,’ studies of shipped mobilities require a complex and comprehensive understanding that people, objects, and capital on ships exist as a hybrid combination. In addition, it is necessary to explore the meanings of the marine world as a major space for shipped mobility. Studies on shipped mobilities require a multidimensional discussion of physical movements, meanings, and practices on the ocean. In addition, it is necessary to analyze microscopic mobility politics through the socio-spatial composition of ships, to understand the relationships between sea and land according to the rhythms of ship movements, and to analyze the materiality of the ocean and institutional devices in terms of ship immobility. This study suggests that mobilities of ships can be applied to the research of island areas and the spatio-temporal rhythms of vessel movements, the production of ships’ immobility and maritime riskscape, and the boundary setting and crossing of North and South Korean maritime border regions in the Korean peninsula.
