Abstract

This paper deals with the very often elusive discrepancy between noun as a part-of-speech and noun as a syntactic category. The purpose of this paper aims at first to show the fact that, in lots of actual sentences, nouns could be virtually used any kinds of syntactic categories such as interjection, adjective, adverb, verb, case marker, pronoun, numeral, and mood. At second, it aims to investigate ways of elucidating relative factors that might cause those categorical discrepancies, and to find out plausible constrictions that play roles in the category changing. Having taken into consideration previous researches, it came to exist that scholars did not strictly differentiate the parts-of-speech from the syntactic categories. As a result, it is often the case that, even in actual full-fledged sentences, each of the syntactic constituent maintains it’s dictionary category that is conferred based on parts-of-speech or word-formation. However, we have found with easy that there are plenty of cases where a syntactic constituent of a sentence can not hold up its part-of-speech any more due to its syntactic environment. To help clear up the discrepancies, we pointed out that syntactic structure is an independent grammatical module that is independent of other grammatical modules (i.e., phonology, morphology, semantics, and information structure, which are all independently, and eventually projected into a surface representation), and, in consequence of which, the syntactic constituent of each sentence should be categorized in terms of syntactic principles per se, not in terms of parts-of-speech circulation, part-of-speech changing, or zero-derivation.
