초록

The purpose of this article is to examine the signification and the limitation of legal regulations on language policy by reviewing the ‘Fundamental Law on the Korean Language(FLKL)’. Firstly, this article looks into several forms of legal regulation on language policy (i.e., constitutional law, special law or general law about language, etc.). Secondly, the spheres of legal interventions on language problem in various countries of the world are classified. And then, the necessity and the problem of legal regulations are pointed out. In this viewpoint, the spheres and the method of legal intervention of the FLKL are scrutinized with its signification and limitation. Finally, this article is concluded by stressing the importance of guaranteeing the linguistic human right and supporting the effective communication as core functions of legal regulations of language policy.

Abstract
