문화와 교육 개념의 실존성: ‘살아있는’ 교육인류학을 위한 소고

이 글에서 나는 최근 교육인류학자들에 의하여 제기된 문화와 교육의 재개념화 논쟁과 관련하여 논의된 개념들의 한계와 의의를 확인하는 가운데 연구자의 세계에 대한 실존적 태도와 가치지향이 내재된 개념화를 주장하였다. 문화와 교육 개념 모두 가치판단으로부터 자유롭지 않다는 것을 자명하게 받아들이는 가운데 ‘메타적’ 삶의 형식으로 개념화를 시도하였다. 메타적 삶의 형식으로서의 문화는 계통발생적으로 유태성숙하는 인간이 삶을 영위하기 위하여 자연을 ‘길들여’ 다양한 ‘내용’으로서의 삶의 형식들, 즉 ‘문(文)’을 창출하는 과정이자 바로 자기 자신과 타인의 몸에 그 ‘문’을 새기는 과정을 뜻한다. 반면, 메타적 삶의 형식으로서의 교육은 자신의 몸에 새겨진 ‘문’의 강요와 억압으로부터 벗어나 더 높고 넓은 세계와 자유로운 몸을 지향하는 과정을 뜻한다. 살아있는 교육인류학을 위한 토대로서 문화와 교육 두 개념은 책상머리와 문화이론들을 정리하는 가운데 구성된 것이 아니라 질적 연구자인 내가 다른 ‘문’을 지닌 타인들을 만나고 그들을 이해하고, 그리하여 나를 이해하려는 과정에서 취하게 된, 연구자로서의 나의, 내 몸의 세계에 대한 태도이다. 즉 ‘몸의 관점’에서 규정된 개념과 교육인류학은 실존적이며 가치지향적일 수밖에 없으며 바로 그 점에서 학문 형성과 생산, 그리고 유형의 면에서 다른 교육인류학의 관점과 다르다는 점을 강조하였다.
Abstract
This paper aims to reconceptualize culture and education in terms of their existence with full consideration of significance and limitation of recent works on reconceptualizing culture and education for an interdisciplinary research of anthropology and educology. After revealing that even recently established concepts of culture and education cannot be value-free, this study tries to conceptualize culture and education as value-oriented 'meta-forms of life'. Culture as a meta-form of life is conceptualized as the human process of culturing (cultivating or taming) nature including the human being itself into various facets of life such as economy, art, religion, science, and so forth. Education as another meta-form of life is conceptualized as another human process of emancipating itself from cultivated or tamed norms (文, particular forms of life), which is inscribed in its body, and thereby prevent it from growing into a higher and wider world with a freer body. This paper gives an emphasis on the existence of these two concepts in that they are no other than the two different attitudes assumed in the world by my body as a qualitative researcher, who has encountered others with different norms from mine, and has tried to understand them and myself.
