초록
The purpose of this paper is to investigate how English teachers and learners perceive the implementation of World Englishes (WEs) in a university English classroom and to suggest the possibility of using English-medium movies to bring WEs into classrooms. To that end, through a questionnaire and interviews, university English teachers and students were asked about their views of using a variety of Englishes in the classroom. This type of data elicitation enabled the participants to provide the researcher with analytical categories on the different perceptions of WEs. Based on the results of the questionnaire, few differences between teachers’ and students’ perceptions of using varieties of English in an English classroom were found. It is suggested that teaching varieties of English is effective for intercultural communications and improving students’ self-confidence in their English use as they realize pronunciation is not the only salient factor for effective international communication. The challenge of using new English teaching methods and incorporating English medium movies into lessons is also discussed.
