사랑이 행복의 원천이라는 경험적(혹은 서술적) 이해와 성서적 증거를 소중히 여기면서 본 논문에서는 사랑을 규범적 차원에서 고찰하고자 한다. 특별히 현대 기독교윤리학계에서 이루어지고 있는 기독교 사랑에 관한 윤리적 담론을 중심으로 본 연구를 진행하고자 한다. 이 논문에서 주로 탐구하고자 하는 몇 가지 주제 혹은 질문을 생각할 수 있겠다. 첫째, 아가페의 규범적 정의에 관한 질문이다. 둘째, 사랑에 대한 정당화의 근거에 관한 주제이다. 셋째, 보편적 아가페와 특수 관계 사이의 관계성에 관한 질문이다. 현대 기독교윤리학계에서 이러한 질문들에 응답하는 대표적인 접근 두 가지가 있다. 하나는 보편 중심적 접근으로서, 특수 관계들 안에서 이루어지는 특수한 사랑의 관계성 보다 사랑의 보편성에 무게 중심을 둔다. 대표적 학자로 아웃카(Gene Outka)와 메일랜더(Gilbert Meilaender)를 들 수 있다. 다른 하나는 특수 중심적 접근으로서, 특수관계들(special relations)에서 이루어지는 사랑의 관계에 우선순위를 두고 거기로부터 기독교 사랑의 본질을 찾고자하는 접근이다. 대표적 학자로는 포우스트(Stephen Post)와 포웁(Stephen J. Pope)을 들 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 앞서 제기한 질문들에 대해 이 두 접근이 각각 어떻게 응답하는지를 살피고 이들의 입장을 비교, 종합하고자 하는데, 이러한 작업을 통해 좀더 온전한 기독교 사랑에 대한 규범적 이해에 이를 수 있기를 기대한다.
Abstract
Given that love is the root of happiness, three questions inform my inquiry in this paper. The first is about the content of agape. What is agape? What normative implications does it contain? The second relates to the justification for universal and particular moral commitments in terms of love. On what grounds can each commitment be justified? The third discusses the relationship between agape as a universal love and special relations(family, friends, co-religionists,compatriots, etc.). Although many scholars have addressed the relationship between particular and universal moral commitments in the Christian tradition, I will highlight two major approaches to this inquiry. One is what I call ‘universality-centered’ approach. Gene Outka and Gilbert Meilaender represent this approach, which focuses on the content of agape and its connection to special relations. The other is what I call ‘particularity-centered’ approach. Its major proponents are Stephen Post and Stephen Pope, who evidently give the primacy to the special relations. I will proceed by briefly examining the two approaches and compare these three camps, highlighting similarities and differences among them. I conclude with some ethical suggestions which can contribute to a richer normative understanding of Christian love.
