자살과 구원의 관계에 대한 신학적 분석과 목회윤리적 성찰

“자살하면 지옥간다”는 통설이 오랫동안 한국교회를 지배해 왔다. 소위 이 통설은 자살예방효과가 있을지는 모르나, 신학적으로 엄밀하게 검토된 주장은 아니다. 이로 인해 많은 유가족들과 지인들이 고통을 받고 있다. 본 논문은 자살과 구원에 관련된 내용과 가르침을 교회 역사적으로 먼저 살피되 주요한 공의회의 결정과 어거스틴, 아퀴나스, 루터, 칼빈 등과 같은 신학자들의 견해를 중심으로 검토한다. 이어서 대죄 회개와 구원의 관계에 대한 교리를 신학적으로 분석하고, 성경의 ‘사함받지 못할 죄’에 대한 신학적 해석을 내린다. 다음에 개신교회의 주요한 신학 전통인 개혁 신학의 전통의 고백서에 나타난 ‘하나님의 영원한 작정,’ ‘성도의 견인 교리’의 관점에서 자살과 구원의 관계에 대해 분석하고 종합적인 결론을 시도한다. 마지막으로 정리된 신학적 입장에 토대해서 목사가 자살과 관련된 목회적 문제를 어떻게 대처하고 유가족을 돌볼 것인지, 또 예방적 차원에서 어떤 목회적 노력을 기울여야 할 것인지에 대한 방안을 제시한다.
Abstract
The statement that “Suicide is unforgivable sin” has been spreading in Korean church for long time. It causes a lot of bitterness and suffering for the bereaved,although it might have preventive effect against suicide. But it needs to be theologically analyzed whether or not it is biblically and morally grounded. This article first of all surveys the decisive ecclesiastical statements regarding suicide in the councils in church history throughout the medieval age. It also deals with doctrines of mortal sins, the relationship of salvation and suicide, and unforgivable sins. In addition, it examines its relationship in the light of the doctrine of perseverance of the saints and God’s eternal decree, which are contained in a significant Protestant confession of faith, Westminst Confession of Faith. Finally, on the basis of this theological conclusion, it suggests some guidelines for pastors to take care of the bereaved and some preventive ways against suicide.
