Abstract
This study aims to discuss the implications of visual methodology in educational research by discussing its epistemological and methodological characteristics. Recently, visual methodology is actively used in various research fields looking into children and the youth. Visual methods they use focuses on what research participants themselves produced (e.g. photograph, moving images, picture, etc.) instead of discussing over the visual materials that are chosen by the researcher. Visual methods have strengths as they enable the emic perspective, which recent qualitative research emphasize, and enable researchers to access the ‘authentic’ cultural environment in which children and adolescents participate. However, when visual methods are used in actual research, there are difficulties in the process of data collection and interpretation, which are not revealed in language-based research methods. Examining the literature about visual methodology as well as previous studies based on visual methodology, this study discusses the epistemological implications of visual methodology and analyzes its methodological characteristics. Ultimately, in addition to discussing the advantage of using visual methods, this study argues the importance of the formative role of researchers using visual research methods.
