본 논문은 한국적 맥락 속 스탠리 하우어워스의 신학적 윤리학의 대안적 읽기를 제안하기 위해 공동체적 증인으로서 교회를 이해하는 하우어워스의 이해를 소개하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 하우어워스가 증인 개념을 사용하여 어떤 공동체를 상정하는지를 살펴본 후, 이 공동체가 어떻게 교회로서 구별되고 왜 그래야만 하는지를 살펴본다. 하우어워스의 신학적 윤리학 속 공동체적 증인의 개념은 환대와 진실함의 주체로서 공동체와 개인 모두를 포함한다. 이러한 이해를 바탕으로 본 논문은 하우어워스가 말하는 공동체는 예수 그리스도에 대한 증인으로서 성경의 하나님을 예배하고, 예수 안에 계시된 하나님의 구별된 성품과 이야기를 세상을 위한 하나님의 선물이자 세상에 대한 하나의 대안으로 살아내는 교회가 되어야 함을 보여준다.
Abstract
This article seeks to introduce Stanley Hauerwas’s understanding of the church as a communal witness, in order to offer an alternative reading of Hauerwas’s theological ethics in the Korean context. After examining with the concept of witness what kind of community Hauerwas has postulated, this article shows how and why that community needs to be distinguished as the church. The concept of witness in Hauerwas’s theological ethics includes both the community and the individuals as the agent of hospitality and truthfulness. In this understanding, this article argues that the community Hauerwas presents should be the church where the God of Scripture is worshipped and where the distinctive character and story of God revealed in Christ are lived out as a gift for and an alternative to the world.
