Abstract
This study examines the frequent use of Romanized abbreviations of international organizations—such as OECD, UNEP, and ICC—by Korean government agencies and media, despite the stipulations of the Framework Act on the Korean Language requiring public language, including official documents and media, to be written in Hangul. Such reliance on Romanized forms is driven by linguistic efficiency, global recognizability, and the absence of standardized Korean abbreviations. In 2023, the “Korean Abbreviation Proposal Group” introduced Korean-language abbreviations for 64 major international organizations. This research analyzes the acceptance, formation principles, and linguistic characteristics of these abbreviations, and investigates their usage in Korean media. Chapter 2 categorizes patterns of public acceptance, Chapter 3 explores the principles underlying abbreviation formation and their strengths and limitations, and Chapter 4 examines current media practices and identifies issues in abbreviation use. Findings reveal that while Korean abbreviations enhance linguistic identity and readability, Romanized forms remain dominant in journalistic contexts. The study concludes by emphasizing the need to raise awareness and encourage proactive adoption of Korean-language abbreviations, particularly within the media sector.
