초록
The Chartism began in May, 1838 when the People’s Charter was published. It lasted 1860. The Chartist movement has a very important role in the 19th century England history. This theme aims to review Chartism of 1848 and the role of Feargus O’Connor. I have two results in this theme as follows. Firstly, O’Connor’s leadership was unquestioned in 1848. Since the very beginning of the campaign he had insisted that the Charter and the land were inseparable. O’Connor and chartists rest on the platform. The Chartism-Irish alliance certainly seems to have strengthened the Chartist platform. O’Connor made the Chartism-Irish alliance. It was a new breakthrough in chartism. Secondly, the Chartist Convention of 1848 launched at Kenning Common on 10th April. O’Connor and Nothern Star had been striving to lead the Convention and Chartism. He can hardly be held responsible for the decisive defeat of the mass platform in 1848. O’Connor played an important role as a leader in crisis time. He ended the Convention in peacefully. He was a great leader in Chartism of 1848. Summing up, it was O’Connor who insisted that the meeting on 10th April should take place, and O’Connor who ensured that all went peaceably. 10th April was a real victory. But the collapse of the National Assembly represented the end of a effort to work through the traditional extra-parliamentary machinery of the mass platform to obtain the Charter. However, the heads of Charter almost were carried out in England.
