3․1운동에서 나타난 지식인들의 역할과 한계에 대한 역사사회학적 일고찰: 대구·경북 지역의 기독교 지도자들을 중심으로

본 연구는 3·1운동 당시는 물론 3·1운동을 전후해서 나타난 기독교 종교지도자들의 지식인으로서의 위치와 역할에 대하여 역사사회학적 해석을 시도한다. 구체적으로는 지식인의 새로운 사상과 인식의 수용관계에서 나타나는 기존의 인식체계나 사회정치적 상황 등과의 변증법적 조응관계에 대하여 지식인 사회학과 지식사회학적 측면에서 논의를 전개하고 인식의 실천과정에서 나타나는 지식인의 역할과 한계에 대하여 고찰한다. 먼저 구한말 한반도를 둘러싼 미국과 일본의 관계, 그리고 이들 국가와 피선교지 한국에서 활동하던 미국인 선교사들의 사회정치적 위치와 역할 등에 대하여 논한다. 다음으로 기독교를 수용한 한국인 지식인들의 교회 정치화와 민족화 움직임, 그리고 이를 막고자 하는 선교사들의 교회 탈정치화와 탈민족화 정책 전개, 그리고 교회 탈지식인화와 대중종교화를 위해 설계된 평양대부흥운동 등에 대하여 논한다. 마지막으로 한국인 종교지도자들 주축의 3·1 만세운동과 대구의 3·8만세운동에 대하여, 그리고 이후 민족자치교회 선언을 통해 반선교사 활동을 펼친 이만집 목사 등의 대구 기독교 종교지도자들의 역할에 대하여 검토한다.
Abstract
This study tries to make an interpretation with the perspectives of historical sociology about the status and roles of Christian leaders as intellectuals at the time of the March First Independence Movement as well as before and after the movement. Specifically, from the aspects of sociology of knowledge and sociology of intellectuals, we discuss on the dialectical relations with existing cognitive systems or social and political situations in the reception of new ideas and perceptions by intellectuals, and examine the roles and limitations of intellectuals. For this, first, we review the US-Japan relation over the Korean peninsula, and the socio-political status and roles of American Protestant missionaries in the last period of Korean Empire. Next, discussion is being made on the movement of politicization and nationalization of the church by Korean intellectuals who embraced Christianity as their new meaning system, on the movement of de-politicization and de-nationalization of the church by missionaries who wanted to prevent the movement of nationalization and politicization of church, and on the Pyongyang revival movement designed by the missionaries for the de-intellectualization and popularization of church (building of mass religion). Finally, we try to analyze the March First Independence Movement, and the March 8th Independence Movement of Daegu led by Korean religious leaders, and specifically the roles of Christian leaders of Daegu represented by Rev. Lee, Man-jip who, after the Independence Movement, by declaring Korean National Autonomous Church, operated the anti-movement against the American missionaries.
