초록
Re-imagining human has become an urgent preoccupation of Humanities and theological anthropology. Among rich discourses on what it means to be human, HAN Kang’s third novel, The Vegetarian, grasps a core of humanity, Homo Amans, the loving human, not as a successful achiever of love but as a doomed failure who nevertheless keeps on loving. This paper attempts at a new reading of positing the novel’s meaning somewhere between heroine’s pursuit that is destined to fail and her courage to go on nonetheless, significantly revisioning the mainstream readings of the novel. Younghye’s desire to be a vegetarian is reinterpreted as an ironic failure in understanding her own sexual desire, while her vegetative imagination is connected with attaining the unattainable; that is, a non-violent living, ultimately loving itself, which is inevitably in the double bind because both living and loving inherently survive on violence.
