이 연구의 목적은 월트 휘트먼의 『풀잎』에서 나타나는 여성주의적 영성과 산타 스피리타의 노래를 분석하는데 있다. 휘트먼은 주로 남성적이고 육체적이며 반기독교적 시인으로 알려져 있다. 하지만 그는 성차별과 인종차별 같은 모든 차별에 반대하였고, 특히 그가 모든 시에서 여성들의 사랑과 자유를 추구하고 남성과 동등한 권리를 추구하였기에, 일종의 여성주의적 시인으로 볼 수 있다. 황홀경에 빠질 때, 휘트먼은 자신의 목소리뿐만 아니라 우주만물의 소리를 듣고 이를 분석하여 『풀잎』에 실었는데, 현대 여성주의자인 줄리아 크리스테바는 그런 원시적 목소리들을 플라톤의 개념을 빌어서 “코라”라고 소개한다. 휘트먼은 종종 바다를 어머니로 부르고 신적 존재로 그리면서, 육체적 어머니만을 의미하는 것이 아니라 속삭이고, 울부짖고, 슬퍼하고 또는 아름다운 벨칸토 목소리로 노래하는 영적 어머니/성령, 즉 코라를 설명한다. 더 나아가 휘트먼은 그의 산타 스피리타가 성령의 다른 이름으로 그에게 여신의 의미를 갖는 여성적 하나님임을 암시하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is an analysis of the feminist spirituality and the song of Santa Spirita observed in Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. Notwithstanding his reputation as a masculine, physical, and anti-Christian poet, he was a kind of the feminist in his poems, seeking love and freedom, presuming the equal rights of women, and opposing to discrimination like sexism and racism. Falling into ecstasies, he listened to and analyzed at all the sounds of the world, and was inspired. Whitman included not only the poet’s voice but also the voices of man and the universe in Leaves of Grass. Julia Kristeva who was known as a feminist calls these voices the chora. Whitman often saw the ocean as a mother who was not a biological mother but a spiritual mother/Holy Spirit whose voice sang, whispered, and cried with mournful, hoarse, and angry voices or beautiful bel canto voices. Whitman named her Santa Spirita, another name for the Holy Spirit, and she became his goddess.
