Abstract
The depiction of Christians in Toni Morrison’s three novels, The Bluest Eye, Paradise, and Home, is very different in spite of similarities in historical backgrounds. In The Bluest Eye, Christian characters such as Pauline, Geraldine and Soaphead who renounce their identity as African Americans are portrayed negatively through their imitation of white people and In Paradise, devout Christians of Ruby, Steward, and Deacon Morgan reveal the destructive nature of inflexible religion. However, Morrison leaves hope for Christians through repentant Deacon and Reverend Misner after the convent massacre. In Home, respectable Christians, Reverend Locke and women in Lotus, deliver valuable help to suffering people including Frank Money and Cee. In the three novels, Morrison’s changing attitude toward Christians can be traced through the Christians’ transition from slavish imitators into mature leaders.
