초록
Referred as “the greatest lyricist of China” by Lu Xun, Feng Zhi is one of the greatest contributors to the advancement of 20th century modern Chinese poetry. This is due to the transcendental spirit, the profound speculation, and the persistent quest for the meanings and value of human life that are incorporated within his poetry. This poetic spirit still promotes new lines of interpretations even in the 21st century. This paper suggests the religious philosophy and quest for truth described in Feng Zhi's poetry as one of the aspects that justly entitles the poetry its acclaimed value. The first part of the paper focuses on the Christian images and poetic usage of language that are reflected upon the poetic devices, such as structure and composition, of his early poetry: the poet describes the corruption of modern literature and the anxiety of human existence in the present era through the mechanism of tension between an individual and God, and self and others. The second part of the paper examines the poet's unique poetics of ‘dialogue’ and ‘reconciliation’: His works from the middle period, represented by Sonnets, depict the poetics of the ‘dialogue’ between “I” and “thou”, and the poetics of “eternal thou” and “reconciliation.” The works of Feng Zhi demonstrates the quest of a soul on a spiritual, intellectual, aesthetic, and religious pilgrimage. Therefore, analyzing the course of this quest can be considered to be worthy because it traces the spiritual journey of an Asian poet who is trapped between the East and West, and tradition and modernity.
