This paper tries to locate the doorway into Chinese modernity. The concept of the door, as used here, concerns our epistemological realm, i.e., our perspectivism viewing the world. For that reason, this paper will be focused primarily on the construction of narrative through which we may cognize the world as such. Lu Xun will be employed as an intermediary figure who will enable us to concretize our understanding of complex Chinese modernity. Methodologically I am planning to pinpoint the two literary motifs appearing in his first literary collection, The Outcry. The hermeneutic aspect of these two terms will be further discussed within the context of Taoist and Buddhist thoughts.
