16세기는 인문주의와 종교개혁의 열풍이 전 유럽을 휩쓸던 시기였다. 이 시기 에라스무스(Desiderius Erasmus, 1466-1536)와 같은 인문주의자들은 고대 그리스와 로마의 저서들 속에서 시민의 존엄성과 전제정을 비난할 근거를 찾고자 했다. 그들에게 군주란 공공의 이익을 추구하는 존재이지 자신을 위해 절대 권력을 휘두르는 존재가 아니었다. 그들은 오히려 신민들의 권리를 지키기 위해 전제적인 폭군을 제거할 수 있다고 주장했다. 그리고 이런 주장들은 프랑스 위그노를 비롯한 당대의 많은 신교도에게 차용되었으며 신교 군주들을 교육하는 하나의 배경을 제공하기도 했다. 스코틀랜드에서 이런 주장을 받아들인 대표적 인물이 바로 당시 유명한 인문주의자이자 장로교 이론가였던 조지 뷰캐넌(George Buchanan, 1506-1582)이다. 이 논문은 그의 대표적 저서 『스코틀랜드 왕의 권한』 (De Jure Regni Apud Scotos) 속에 드러난 왕권의 기원과 신민들의 저항권 그리고 이런 내용을 담은 『스코틀랜드 왕의 권한』을 뷰캐넌이 제자 제임스 6세(James Ⅵ, 재위 1567-1625)에게 헌정한 이유가 무엇이었는지를 살펴보려는 논문이다.
Abstract
The 16th century was when the fever of the Reformation swept Europe. In this period, humanists such as Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536) tried to find basis to criticize tyranny in books of Ancient Greece and Rome. To them, the monarch was a being that pursues public interest not exerting power for themselves. Their claims especially had a powerful influence on Huguenots of France, who claimed tyrant could be removed to protect rights of people. The claim of humanists was borrowed by many contemporary Protestants including Huguenot and supplied a background to educate monarchies of Protestant. A representative figure who accepted this claim in Scotland was George Buchanan (1506-1582), a famous humanist and Presbyterian theorist. This study is intended to find out the origin of royal authority and people’s rights of resistance in Buchanan’s book De Jure Regni Apud Scotos, along with his intention through the contents.
