연구 목적: 이 연구는 16세기 종교 개혁사에서 중요한 인물인 스코틀랜드 존 낙스에 대한 연구이다. 루터와 칼빈 그리고 츠빙글리에 비하여 국내 역사학계의 상황을 보면 낙스 연구가 활발하지 않다. 이 논문은 낙스의 신학적인 사상이 아닌 교육 사상에 대한 연구에 그 목적이 있다. 16세기 종교개혁이 종교만의 개혁이 아니라 교육 개혁의 면을 가지고 있음을 드러낸다. 연구 방법: 연구 방법은 1차 사료(문헌) 『제1치리서』를 근거로 역사적 연구 방법에 기초한다. 연구 내용: 이 논문의 연구 내용은 종교개혁 전후의 교육 상황과 『제1치리서』의 작성 배경과 내용을 언급하고, 『제1치리서』를 중심으로 낙스의 개혁 사상의 핵심인 학교 설립의 필요성과 학제 개혁 그리고 보편교육과 의무교육에 대한 그의 교육 개혁안을 분석하였다. 결론 및 제언: 16세기 종교개혁사에서 교육 개혁이 얼마나 중요한지를 이해하고, 낙스의 보편교육과 의무교육에 대한 교육 사상이 이후 근대 교육 개혁과 발전에 미친 영향을 주목할 필요가 있다. 또한 낙스의 교육 사상에서 교양과 인문학을 강조하는 커리큘럼과 국가 공교육 시스템을 마련하였다는 것은 혁신적인 안이다. 향후 사회적 약자를 위한 평등의 가치에 대한 낙스의 교육 사상에 대한 심층적인 후속 연구가 필요하다고 본다.
Abstract
This article is a study of John Knox, a Scottish reformer who was an important figure in the Reformation in the 16th century. Compared to that of Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli, Knox’s research is not prevalent in historical publications. In studying Knox, I will focus on his educational thought rather than his theological thought. The reason for focusing on his educational thought is to knowledge that Reformation in the 16th century was not only a religious reformation, but also an educational reformation. This article is based on the historical research methods on the primary document, The First Book of Discipline. In the article, I will address the state of education pre and post reformation and the contents of The First Book of Discipline. I will also analyze the neccessity of school establishments, reformation of the school system, universal education, and compulsory education. It is necessary to conduct and in-depth study on Knox’s educational philosophy promoting equality and serving the socially underprivileged.
