Abstract

This study examines how <Hetoimasai> began to be drawn in the Byzantine Empire, how it changed, and what meaning it came to have. In addition, it examines the validity of the currently accepted definition of <Hetoimasia>, that is, 'the icon depicting an empty throne'. Thus, the meaning and role of the Byzantine <Hetoimasia> are reexamined, and a new frame of interpretation for this painting is presented. ‘Hetoimasia’ is the Romanization of the Greek word ‘ἑτοιμασία’, meaning ‘preparation’. In Byzantine painting, it is used in the sense of 'preparation of the throne(Hetoimasia tou Tronou)' or 'prepared throne'. <Hetoimasia> has undergone significant changes in composition and meaning over the course of history. The factor that caused the fluidity of the visual style can be said to be the change of the social context and, above all, religious interests. <Hetoimasia>, drawn before the iconoclastic controversy, symbolizes the mysterious presence and majesty of God as the throne of God, but unlike ancient icons, Christian dogma: the Son identical to the Father, the concept of God as the Trinity. This is a visualization of the decision of the Council of Ephesus (431) that reaffirmed the ‘Nicene Creed (325)’. After the iconoclastic controversy, Hetoimacia was included in two composite paintings. <Hetoimasia> was included in <Pentecost> and conveyed the mission of the church and the legitimacy of the Byzantine Empire. <Hetoimasia> became a component of the <Last Judgment>, emphasizing Christ's sacrifice for the salvation of mankind and its eschatological meaning. <Hetoimasia> is not an 'empty throne' but a 'prepared throne', and is a multiple symbol that reveals various Christian dogmas.
