Abstract
This paper aims to analyze recent claims regarding the efficiency of Roman citizen cavalry. In situations where infantry stood in confrontation, cavalry found it difficult to charge head-on; many victories were achieved by attacking the flanks or rear. However, even these successes were the result of combined tactics with infantry, not cavalry acting alone. Compared to Carthaginian, Macedonian, or Numidian cavalry, it is difficult to consider Roman citizen cavalry efficient or dominant. When analyzing cavalry-on-cavalry engagements from a tactical perspective, the tactics employed by the Greeks, Macedonians, Carthaginians, Numidians, and Parthians involved repeatedly maneuvering across the battlefield—advancing, retreating, turning, reforming, and re-advancing. In contrast, the unique tactics exclusively used by Roman cavalry were close-quarters combat, melee, and dismounted combat. Roman citizen cavalry, armed with helmets, armor, shields, spears, and swords, held an advantage in close-quarters and hand-to-hand fighting. The problem lay in the fact that highly mobile Numidian and Parthian cavalry preferred ranged combat and avoided close engagement. The defeat at the Battle of Carrhae demonstrates the inefficiency of Roman cavalry against ranged attacks. Therefore, I believe the decline of Roman citizen cavalry was due to its tactical inefficiency becoming apparent even before its replacement by allied cavalry. The inefficiency of Roman cavalry persisted into the Imperial period, leading to frequent defeats against Germanic tribes and Sassanian Persia.
