Abstract

This paper tried to grasp which model of combat was general in the battle of hoplites during the Roman Republican Period. Roman legio did not form a single phalanx, but a lot of small phalanx so-called maniplus. Considering the general characteristics of the battle, I think that sporadic hand-to-hand combat was more common than mass shoving(othismos) or continuous hand-to-hand combat. The model of sporadic hand-to-hand combat explains the reasons why the battle of hoplites did last for many hours, and why relatively small ratio of casualties was inflicted on the victors. If there were frequent lulls in the battles of hoplites, it would have been much easier for the second line maniples to move up into the first line using the gaps between maniples. Each maniple might have been a suitable unit for making a sortie from a lull under the baton of a centurion. However the model of sporadic hand-to-hand combat can’t explain how the battles were decided. I suppose that full-scale hand-to-hand battle or mass shoving made a decisive role in closing the battle of hoplites.
