초록

Vietnam has accepted the Chinese character for over one thousand years since it was controlled by China from Han Dynasty. And even after its independence from China, the feudal dynasties of Vietnam considered the Confucianism as its ideology, and chose the Chinese characters as its official character. This has made the Chinese character widespread across the country. As a result, most of Vietnamese has had their names in the Chinese characters. In addition, about 70% of Vietnamese words have stemmed from the Chinese characters. Also, in the household manners, the Vietnamese people have accepted the Chinese ways, which made them use the Chinese words in original forms as well as in contents. This shows that the Chinese character is deeply rooted in the Vietnamese society and individual communities. The Chinese character has been localized in Vietnam for about two thousand years and became "Tu Han-Viet," the Chinese character in Vietnamese way. After the end of 17th century, the Tu Han-Viet is written with the help of Latin alphabets. This implies that Tu Han-Viet has possessed the distinct characteristics from the Chinese characters in the process of becoming the Vietnamese. This paper would examine the formation of Tu Han-Viet and the characteristics in order to facilitate the understanding of the Vietnamese language.
