Abstract

At the very dawn of humanity, death and religious myth have always been intimately intertwined. However, at the very root of this special link is still the defiance and denial of death. In the fairy tale of Shan Hai Jing, the concept of eternal life transforms this undeniable reality of death. In ancient mythology, everlasting life is realized through this passage from death to another form of life. There are many ancient Chinese myths that depict life transformation, dead persons changing into other creatures; for example, after Kua Fu(父) dies of thirst due to running after the Sun, his staff is transformed into a peach forest; the baby girl, Nu-Wa(女娃), after drowning in the East Ocean becomes a small bird. Death is not the destruction of the soul, but it is a kind of reincarnation into a new life. The ancient people believed that death did not go against the cycle of nature, but rather, it is the relationship between man and nature that establishes death as not the end of life. Death in man's existence is of utmost concern, resulting in a myriad of cultural phenomena. By studying the fairy tale of Shan Hai Jing we can know the varied opinions about death among the ancient people. This paper utilizes Shan Hai Jing as the basis for studying the ancient people's view on death, giving proof and reference to their beliefs and values on this undeniable reality.
