Abstract

This paper reviews the images around Antigone reproduced through ages, from Sophocles to the 20th centuries. It consists of two parts. In the first part, I focus on the Sophoclean Antigone, while in the following part, on the Antigone created by Seneca, J. Anouilh and L. Brecht. The central role of women in Attic tragedy-a strong contrast to their muted role in Athenian society was pointed out by many scholars. Some interpret it as an evidence that the status of Greek women were neither socially secluded nor despised, but significant enough. But I argue those ‘strong’ women like Antigone in tragedy do not represent ordinary or exemplary women, but women in cursed society such as Thebes or Argos. In this tragedy, Thebes is a byword for manlish woman, feminized men, despotism and incest. While Antigone makes no appearance in Homer, Hesiod, or Pindar(whose nationality is Thebes!), Sophocles created and vitalized Antigone-character, manipulating traditional myths for political purposes-that is Athenocentric and anti-Thebaic. My argument is based on the fact that Thebes(and Argos) took the side of Persia against Athens during the Persian war. In short, the Antigone of Sophocles appeared as a propagandic civic project to mock and to weaken Thebaic influence. In the second part, I argue that like Sophocles who revised the traditional myth according to Attic mentality, so did other writers such as Seneca, J. Anouilh and L. Brecht. Each of them reinterpreted and reproduced Antigone-story according to their own viewpoint which was heavily influenced by the situation(especially political and social background under which they lived), spirit and belief. In this way, myths or stories have been constantly reformulated and reshaped by authors to conform with political, social or cultic agendas and it gives us ㅁ lesson that we should not miss the context from which a text is emerged.
