The question I am attempting to answer in this paper is: whether or not Plato’s pedestrian and innocent portrayal of Socrates in the Apology, the Phaedo and the Republic is justified, given the skeptical orientation of the elenchus, by the contextual evidence? The evidence I will be considering is Socrates’ words and deeds expressed mainly in these three dialogues and, to a lesser extent, in the dialogues Charmides, Laches, Hippias Major and Alcibiades Major. I answer that Plato’s portrayal of Socrates is not justified by the relevant evidence.
Abstract
The question I am attempting to answer in this paper is: whether or not Plato’s pedestrian and innocent portrayal of Socrates in the Apology, the Phaedo and the Republic is justified, given the skeptical orientation of the elenchus, by the contextual evidence? The evidence I will be considering is Socrates’ words and deeds expressed mainly in these three dialogues and, to a lesser extent, in the dialogues Charmides, Laches, Hippias Major and Alcibiades Major. I answer that Plato’s portrayal of Socrates is not justified by the relevant evidence.
