초록

This paper focuses on the unique mode of emotional expression in Li Bai’s “Song on the River”(Jian gshang Yin), composed during his later years while residing in Jiangxia(present-day Wuhan, Hubei). It approaches the poem from the perspective of Xing(興), a central concept in Chinese poetics. Bold, unrestrained, and passionate expressions of emotion frequently appear in Li Bai’s works, but in this poem the contrast and fluctuation of emotions are especially striking and noteworthy. In order to clarify this emotional flow, the paper also examines two other poems written around the same period, aiming to discuss how Xing functions as a mode of emotional expression in Li Bai’s poetry. Although Xing can be classified in various ways, the author considers two principal dimensions: first, the symbolic and metaphorical openings found in early poetry such as the Book of Songs(Shijing), and second, the inspiration-driven flow of emotions. At times, these two dimensions merge, while in other cases one predominates over the other. The author argues that in Li Bai’s poetry, the primary emphasis should be placed on the outpouring and movement of emotions, and the discussion is developed accordingly. In particular, this paper focuses on the expression “Xing in full flourish” (xinghan, 興酣) as it appears in “Song on the River”, and by examining two other poems from the same period, it seeks to elucidate the nature and modes of Li Bai’s Xing, as revealed through experiences of extreme emotion.
