Abstract
This paper aims to investigate from which perspective Aeschylus see the war in his tragedies: Persians, Seven against Thebes, Agamemnon. Some results of this investigation are the following: 1. Their narrative of war in common conveys a negative view of war of conquest. The careful analysis of its motive, process and consequence shows that an expeditionary force is prone to commit acts of hybris, thus leading to either defeat or the reversal of its fortune in which the conqueror is reversed into the position of the defeated. 2. This interpretation on the war of conquest by Aeschylus is based on the democratic ideology in the 5th century in Athens. In Persians the Athenian democracy is shown to prevail over Persian despotism. And in Seven against Thebes the institution of democracy can be harmed by the stasis arising from the conflict between royal families and their eagerness of tyranny. In Agamemnon, finally, the anger of citizens and gods over a war criminal is seen to reflect the democratic atmosphere in Athens. 3. Their major figures such as Xerxes, Eteokles and Agamemnon, are characterized as a tragic hero who, on the one hand, commits acts of hybris by willing to conquer a city state and her citizens. Confronted with the dilemma situation, on the other, especially the character of Eteokles and Agamemnon is dramatized to make a tragic decision and then to be driven into ruin in the state of atē.
