Abstract
The aim of this article is to analyze how Euripides makes use of the subject of the Delion case in a dramatic way in the Suppliant Women. First of all, this article focuses on the fact that this work contains a funeral speech, which was a well-established genre at that time. In this respect, Adrastos’ funeral speech is closely compared with and explained by reference to Pericles' funeral speech, a representative example of the genre. This article also accounts for the meaning of the scene of Euadne's suicide and the kommos of the chorus, both of which are criticized for inconsistency and exaggerated emotion. These scenes can be made sense of as a part of the dramatized funeral ceremony. One the basis of the above analyses, this article concludes that the Suppliant Women is intended to comfort the Athenians and to enhance the pride of the Athenians by dramatically recreating the funeral rituals for the Athenians who died in Delion.
