아리스토텔레스의 『정치학』 7-8권에서 여가(scholê) 개념

초록

아리스토텔레스는 『정치학』 7-8권에서 최선의 정체의 성격과 조건들을 제시한다. 최선의 정체는 최선의 시민들로 이루어진 것이다. 최선의 시민이 되는 것은 최선의 인간이 되는 것이며, 최선의 인간이 되는 것은 자신의 혼 안에 있는 이성적 부분의 실현을 본 인간을 의미한다. 그것은 여가에서 가능하다. 전쟁의 목적이 평화이듯 노동의 목적은 여가이며, 이런 여가는 단순한 휴식이나 놀이와는 근본적으로 다른 것이다. 여가는 유용함이 아닌 고상함을 추구하는 정신과 결합되며 지적인 탁월성과 관련된다. 여가는 탁월성을 갖춘 삶으로 우리를 인도한다. 또한 여가는 교육의 주된 목적이다. 여가를 위한 교육은 음악이다. 음악은 혼의 성격에 영향을 줄 수 있기 때문이다. 이상의 논의가 아리스토텔레스가 『정치학』 7-8권에서 여가에 대하여 해명한 것이다. 아리스토텔레스의 이런 여가에 대한 고찰은 플라톤의 여가에 대한 언급과 차이를 갖는다. 그 차이는 여가와 놀이와의 관계, 여가와 관조적 삶(bios theôrêtikos)과의 관련 등에서 비롯된다. 또한 아리스토텔레스의 여가는 시간의 여유나 노동에서 벗어난 시간의 의미를 갖는 하위수준과 관조적 삶과 관련되는 상위수준으로 구분해서 고찰될 수 있다. 이런 구분을 플라톤에게 적용하면 플라톤의 여가는 하위 수준 의미의 여가에 더 근접한 것으로 판단된다.

Abstract

Aristotle explains at full length the nature and conditions of the best regime in his work, the Politics, Books VII-VIII. It is obvious that the best regime is composed of best citizens; to be the best citizen, it is to be the best man who attains the happiness or has the actualization of the rational part of soul. We are able to accomplish it in the leisure(scholê) that should be clearly distinguished from the play and the rest. For the leisure is an activity; it is regarded as the aim of work, just as peace is regarded as the aim of war. Given these points, it is absurd to say that the purpose of life should be playing. The leisure is characterized by philosophical investigations and intellectual excellences, neither by utility nor by necessity of life. That is why the leisure is considered as the end of education. Music is an essential part of education for good leisure because it affects the character and the soul of the listener. Aristotle’s thesis of leisure sometimes seems unoriginal, looking at that of Plato’s dialogues; but it is completely different from Plato’s presented in the Theaetetus and in the Laws, because the differences between two philosophers are resulted from the following two statements:(1) The leisure may not be identified with the play and the rest. (2) The leisure is to be accomplished in vita contemplativa(bios theôrêtikos). If we could divide into two levels of leisure, that is low level leisure and high level leisure, the first could be defined as free time or simply rest, but the last as contemplative life. Briefly stated, it is probable that the Plato’s leisure is more closely tied to the first.
