Abstract
Alasdair MacIntyre succeeds Aristotle’s ethics in as follows: 1. the need of virtual ethics, 2. teleology, 3. functionalism, 4. communitarianism, 5. desert and justice, 6. concept of virtue. However, his ethics is non- Aristotelianism in some crucial parts. For it is historical virtue ethics. His concept of practice has to be understood in certain social contexts. His practice is not a single action or a set of actions but the cooperated organized actions. This allows too many activities in the area of ethical actions. That all the technological accomplishments are estimated by moral criterion would limit human activities and even the estimation will not be come true. Theoria as the pure intellectual virtue, which has a great role in Aristotle’s ethics, is missing in his ethics because historicism cannot consist with the virtue of theoria. He doesn't talk about the mean as the standard of virtues. It is because he cannot explain the different virtues by the mean, the universal principle as he investigates the lists of virtues of the various traditions historically. It does not seem to be overcome that his virtue ethics cannot avoid a moral relativism. It is not possible to judge which tradition is superior and choiceworthy with rational justification. For traditions consist of the various elements and aspects.
