Abstract
The sculptural decoration at the Temple of Zeus in Olympia (470-456 B.C.) was believed to mark the beginning of the Early Classical phase in the Greek art history. In this essay, I will first discuss the iconography and composition of the “Classical” metopes at the temple and point out that their emergence can be attributed to thematic and formalistic motivations. I believe that the sculptor attempted to assimilate Herakles with Theseus, following the contemporary artistic convention. He also wanted to create rhythmic or metric variation in the proceeding of the narrative scenes. Next, I will point out that these metopes register and contain an ample amount of information, and do not conform to the historiographical belief that Classical art is characterized by succinct rationality in form and content. By negating the mystified mental generative force behind the visual objects in Olympia, I urge to look into the true character of the Greek society and art manifested in this public monument of “the Classical style.” Rather than the ideal of democracy and Humanism, which have been so frequently associated with the Greek civilization of the Classical period, we observe in this temple decoration the way the Greek publicly enunciated their superiority to other races, gender, and species.
