초록

이 글은 아우구스투스 시대에 활약한 스트라보의『지리학』(Geographika)에 구현되어 있는 우주론과 역사관이 특히 포세이도니오스의 영향이 뚜렷한 것임을 입증하려는 것이다. 이 문제는 저자 자신은『지리학』의 처음 두 권에서 그 영향을 부인한다는 점에서 논구할 가치가 있으며, 나아가 후기 헬레니즘 시대 분과학문의 지식인이 철학이라는 개념을 구사하는 방식의 구체적 예시로서 의의가 있다. II장은 지리학에서 바람직하고 가능한 철학과 과학의 수준을 독자에게 설명하려는 스트라보의 방법론적 논의를 상세히 분석한다. 스트라보의 논의는 부조리하고 서투르며, 종종 모순적이라는 점을 포착하고, 나아가 그런 일이 일어나는지 까닭을 논의한다. III장은 스트라보가 두 가지 점에서 포세이도니오스가 개량한 스토아주의의 영향을 강하게 받았음을 논증한다. 지리학과 역사를 하나의 일관된 체계로 통합하려 한 시도가 그 하나요, 다른 하나는 로마제국에 인간세계의 중심으로서 특권을 부여한 방식이다. 포세이도니오스가 우주와 세계(oikumene)의 중심, 즉 패권(hegemon)으로서 로마인의 위치를 설정하고, 그에 상응하는 도덕적 책임을 요구했던 것처럼, 스트라보 역시 로마와 이탈리아가 문명/야만의 스펙트럼 상에서도 가장 특권적인 중심에 놓인 것이 섭리(pronoia) 혹은 필연(ananke)의 결과라고 설명한다.
