Abstract
This paper aims at elucidating the meaning of light (lumen) and beauty (pulchridtudo) in the philosophy of Albert the Great. On the basis of the Plato’s theory of participation, Albert regards God as the prototype of beauty both in the soul and in all corporeal things. Following Pseudo Dionysius, he says that God is none other than the Good itself and that the first effect of the Good is light. So for Albert, the light is the mediating notion between the Good and the beauty. According to him the specific definition of beauty is “the splendor of the substantial or accidental forms over the proportioned and well limited parts of matter (splendor formae substantialis vel accidentalis super partes materiae proportionatas et terminatas).” Furthermore, beauty arouses the desire to itself and congregates all things. These conditions of the notion of beauty are based on the metaphysical notion of light, and are derived from the Dionysian concept of light.
