플라톤의 『정치가』에서 국가(polis)의 정치가 혹은 통치자에 대한 논의는 있는데, 국가를 이루는 시민(politēs)은 어디에 있는가? 즉 국가 안에서 시민은 어떤 존재이며 어떤 역할을 하는가? 그리고 이 텍스트의 특성상, 시민의 지식은 어떤 것인가? 이 논문은 이러한 물음들에 대해 답을 구하는 것이며, 크게 보면 플라톤이 추구하는 ‘국가’와 그의 정치철학에서 시민의 규정과 그 역할에 대한 연구이다. 플라톤이 『정치가』에서 표방하는 주제는 한 국가의 통치자가 가진 지식인 ‘참된 통치술은 무엇인가’이다. 그러나 이 물음에 대한 답을 구하는 과정에서 그가 보여주는 탐구 방법론인 ‘변증술’의 논의가 더 실제적인 주제로 보인다. 이 점에서 『정치가』는 방법론과 내용이 함께 추구되는 이중적인 텍스트라고 할 수 있다. 이 논문에서 제기하는 ‘『정치가』에서 시민은 어디에 있는가’라는 물음에 관한 우리의 논의는 순서상 이 텍스트에 나타나는 ‘변증술’의 논의를 따라갈 것이다. 그렇지만, 우리의 작업은 텍스트의 내용이 ‘통치자의 지식’을 분리해내는 작업을 수행하는 과정에서 나오는 지식들에 대한 논의인 데 맞추어, 거기서 ‘통치자의 것이 아닌 지식’으로 배제되는 지식들을 역으로 추적하여 ‘시민의 지식’을 규정해보고자 하는 것이다. 이러한 과정을 거쳐서 우리가 ‘시민의 지식’을 규정할 수 있다면, 이를 통해 시민의 기능과 역할을 규정할 수 있고, 결과적으로 이 텍스트에서 플라톤이 시민을 어떻게 규정하고 있는지 이해할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
In Plato’s Politikos (statesman), there are discussions about the statesman or ruler of a state (polis), but where is the discussion about the citizens (politēs)? Who are the members of the polis? In other words, what is the existence and role of the citizen in a polis, and what is the knowledge of the citizen based on the nature of this text? This paper seeks answers to these questions, and it is largely a study of the definition and role of citizens in Plato’s ‘state’ and in his political philosophy. The apparent subject of the dialogues in the Politikos is the question of what is the true ‘politikē (art of ruling)’, which is the knowledge of the ruler of a state. However, the discussion about the ‘dialektikē (art of dialogue)’, which is the methodology of inquiry that he shows in the process of seeking the answers to this question, seems to be the real lesson. In this sense, the Politikos is a dual text in which methodology and contents are pursued together. Our study around the question “where are the citizens in the Politikos” raised in this paper will follow the order of the discussion of the ‘dialectic’ in this text. However, as the textual content is a discussion of the knowledges that come from the process of separating ‘the knowledge of the ruler’, our work is to trace back the knowledges excluded as ‘knowledge not of the ruler’ and then to define the ‘knowledge of the citizen’. If we can define in this way the ‘knowledge of the citizen’, we will be able to define the function and role of the citizen, and as a result, we will understand how Plato defines citizens in this text.
