Abstract
This paper aims to elucidate how matters can contribute to the generation of substantial forms. In De Generatione Animalium, Aristotle describes the cases of maternal atavism in which offspring have traits of maternal ancestors that their mothers do not have in actuality. Considering females are regarded to provide only matters to reproduction in Aristotle’s embryology, it seems to support the matters’ contribution. Nevertheless, the idea of matters’ contribution was often rejected since 1) forms are deemed to be not generated, 2) matters’ contribution seems to violate the logico-ontological priority of form to matter, and 3) generated forms affected by matters are not considered as substantial forms. In this paper, I will advocate matters’ contribution by three distinctions: 1) a distinction between the coming-to-be and the process of coming-to-be, 2) a distinction of hylomorphism in the contexts of einai and genesis, and 3) a distinction between embryogenesis and morphogenesis. I will argue that 1) forms ‘emerge’ without the process of coming-to-be when movements that matters suffer end, 2) matters can contribute to the generation of forms by changing movements through their counteractions, and 3) not only accidental forms, results of morphogenesis, but also substantial forms, results of embryogenesis, which are the principles of nourishment and reproduction are generated through the same mechanism. Therefore, matters can contribute to the generation of substantial forms.
