Abstract

Cleanthes’ Hymn to Zeus, a prayer to the God (Zeus) who rules the universe, is the only complete writing that exits of any early Stoic author. It is an important document, not only for its historical value, but also in terms of its content, since it conveys the religious and ethical thoughts of early Stoic philosophy through poetic form. Therefore, this study examines Cleanthes’ Hymn to Zeus, analyzes the concept of God (Zeus) in Stoic philosophy, and determines how the doctrine of the immanent God of Stoic philosophy is conveyed by the traditional Greek poetic form. First, we present the genre characteristics and structure of the poem, and then discuss two of the themes: the “praise for the power of Zeus” and the “problem of the bad people.” In particular, by analyzing the problem of “bad people,” which has drawn the most attention from researchers, we examine how the problem of “evil” is raised and eventually resolved. Finally, we determine how Hymn to Zeus deals with this issue and conveys the doctrine of Stoic philosophy through the praise of the power of Zeus. In sum, Hymn to Zeus presents the philosophical doctrine of the Stoics, while structured as a religious hymn to the traditional god, Zeus. Cleanthes also argues that the “problem of evil” is the result of human ignorance and excess, and therefore realizing and obeying the common logos and common law (nomos) through divine “understanding” is what human beings must do. Moreover, his Hymn to Zeus proposes the Stoic way of life, i.e., “life in accord with nature,” as a Stoic religious and philosophical doctrine
