Abstract

This paper examines Stoic corporealism through the elucidation of the Stoic corporeal god. In the Stoic physics, the world as a whole and things within the world are described as composites of two principles: the active (to poioun) and the passive (to paschon). Both these principles, termed god and matter, are corporeals (i.e., bodies). The corporeality of god is the foundation for characterization of the Stoic ontological system as corporealism (or as materialism). Thus, the elucidation of the active principle provides the basis for understanding Stoic corporealism. This paper, therefore, examines the corporeality of these two principles, god and matter, and, in particular, the corporeality of the active principle, to understand how it is that the active principle (i.e., god) is a body, and thus to understand Stoic corporealism more completely. First, I introduce the main fragments that present the corporeality of the two principles and indicate how the corporeality of the two principles is expressed (Section 2). Then, I review the conception of bodies (sōmata) in Stoicism by considering the Stoic criterion of a body as something that either acts or is acted upon. Then, I show how the Stoics modified the discussion of “being―body” from Plato’s Sophist, 245e6-249d5, and, thereby created the interpretation that “everything that either acts or is acted upon is body (=being)” (Section 3). After this, examining Plutarch’s discussion at Conjugalia Praecepta cp. 34, I illustrate the concept of the body as the single organic united entity in which the parts and wholes entirely depend on each other (Section 4). Finally, following this discussion, I argue that the corporeality of the active principle implies that the mobility of the body (=being) is inherent in the body (=being) (Section 5).
