Abstract
“Only virtue is good.” and “virtue is sufficient for happiness.” These two theses are core propositions of Stoic ethics. However, these propositions show themselves radical claims whose meaning goes beyond our commonsense apprehension. They have been posing a controversial problem since ancient times. A strategy for arriving at an adequate understanding of the general features of Stoic ethics lies in working out an intelligible reconstruction of these propositions in a way their paradox dissolves itself. There have been attempts for a reconstruction of meanings of transmitted ethical texts based on Kantian reading which was triggered by the prima facie similarity between Stoic and Kantian ethics. True, these attempts could shed light on partial aspects of Stoic ethics. But they all, I think, end in failure to make sense of the general and fundamental traits of Stoic ethics. Kantian reading is characterized by a method of internalized and practical reflection upon morality. However, this kind of reading not only tends to neglect several significant textual evidences, but also, and more importantly, betrays itself incapable of explaining away the paradox of those theses. This is a decisive weak point of every Kantian reading. In order to explain away the paradox of the theses, we should pay attention to Stoic conception of contemplation. An analytic study of several texts in which contemplation plays the role of the leitmotif will enable us to grasp that its conception functions as a hidden explanatory basis for those two theses. Besides, the same study will lead us to be able to understand that Stoic ethics is based on its theology and Stoic virtue is not confined within the extension of ethics, but a comprehensive and integrated concept.
